Types of Orchis
There are two primary types:
Salam Panja (Orchis mascula) and Salam Misri (Salab Mishri).
Salam Panja (Salab Panja):
Found in moist mountainous regions of Iran, such as Zagros and Alborz. Characterized by grayish-green leaves with purple veins and spike-like clusters of small pink or violet flowers. The root is hand-shaped, hence the name “Panja” (meaning claw/hand). It is widely used in traditional Iranian medicine and valued for its gelatinous root.
Salam Misri (Salab Mishri):
Commonly referred to as Orchis maculata in scientific literature. Grows in warmer climates and has longer leaves and lighter-colored flowers compared to Orchis mascula. Its roots are rounder and more compact, with a higher starch content. Though popular in Middle Eastern traditional medicine, wild high-quality specimens are also found in Iran.
This plant generally features cluster-shaped flowers, dotted or plain leaves, and a thick green stem. Flowers appear from late spring to early summer and emit a pleasant fragrance. Roots must be harvested at specific times to preserve medicinal properties.
