Botanical characteristics of Galbanum

Galbanum is a perennial herbaceous plant, monocarpic, with rosette leaves, thick stems, silvery-green, and spreading leaves at the ground. The leaves are covered with broad, fine, and long hairs that are wide and have few to deep incisions. The flowers are yellow and have the shape of an umbrella.

Initially, the stem is green, with distinct light lines in the form of stripes, gradually changing to a light color.

The stem initially appears as a bulbous structure at the end of which the plant seeds mature, with the inner tissue gradually becoming cotton-like. Galbanum flowers emerge at the base parts of the main and subsidiary stems, appearing yellow and umbrella-shaped. The number of umbels ranges from 4 to 6.

Methods of steam distillation:

1. Continuously steam distillation:

In this method, a long steam boiler, typically 4 to 6 m in length, is utilized. The plant material from which the essential oil is to be extracted is poured into the upper section of the steam boiler. The vapor enters a column placed in the middle of the boiler, causing the evaporation of the essential oils present in it.

The plant residues are removed from the lower section of the boiler after the extraction of essential oils.

Advantages of continuous steam distillation:

– The equipment operates continuously, eliminating the need to shut down to remove plant residues lacking essential oils.

– This method requires less human effort and has a high production capacity.

Disadvantages of continuously steam distillation:

– The amount of essential oil extracted from the plant material is significantly lower compared to water and steam distillation.

– It is not suitable for extracting essential oils from flowers, fruits, and roots.

 

2. Water and steam distillation

This is the most common method of essential oil extraction in industrialized countries.

The following equipment is required for distillation using this method:

– Steam generator

– Condenser

Steam generator machine

This machine is a furnace that operates using electric, gas, oil, chemical, and coal fuel to produce the required steam.

The steam pressure produced ranges between 400 to 700 Pa, with a temperature of 150 to 170°C.

After steam formation, the steam passes through a pipe connected to the steam generator machine into a steam boiler.

In the boiler, the steam pressure is reduced, and its temperature decreases from 150 to 170 °C to 100 °C.

Next, under the influence of heat and steam generated from the plant parts, essential oil droplets are released. They move along with water vapor particles to the upper area of the boiler, where the evaporation pipe is located.

The main tank of the distillation apparatus is the steam boiler, which has a cylindrical shape with a narrow bottom part and a wider upper part.

For semi-industrial scale extraction of essential oils, boilers with volumes of 3 to 5 m³ are suitable.

For standard oil extraction, plant parts from which the essential oil is extracted should be uniformly placed inside the steam boiler. This ensures that steam flows easily through areas with lower density, while in areas with higher density, steam flow is more challenging. This can cause to prevent the extraction of all essential oils from the plant material.

The capacity of the steam boiler for extracting essential oils is determined based on its volume. Accordingly, it should not exceed the standard limit for placing the desired plant parts inside the boiler.

• The temperature of the distilled solutions should not exceed 25 to 30 °C. If the temperature exceeds 35 °C, it increases the risk of harmful chemical reactions in the extracted essential oil.

• Liquid mixtures containing essential oil and water are transferred from the condenser to collection vessels. Indeed, they are separated into two parts based on the difference in specific gravity between water and essential oil.
• In semi-industrial and industrial scales, the collection vessels are made of metal.
• Due to the different shapes and sizes of containers used to separate heavier oils from water and lighter oils from water, care should be taken when selecting essential oil collection containers. This is because the weight of most essential oils is less than that of water, so they float on the surface, while the weight of some essential oils is greater than that of water.
• Small essential oil and water particles enter the collection vessels after exiting the condenser.
• In the next step, the essential oil particles turn into small droplets. They settle as layers at the bottom or on the surface of the water based on their specific gravity.
• To expedite the separation of essential oil from water and the formation of distinct water and essential oil layers, the collection vessels can be gently shaken.
• Temperature plays a crucial role in creating a difference in specific gravity between water and essential oil. With an increase in temperature, the weight of essential oil decreases compared to water. Moreover, at higher temperatures, the cohesion between water molecules decreases, leading to an increase in the dissolution rate of essential oil in water. Therefore, distilled waters containing essential oil will have lower essential oil content.
