Physical characteristics
The Humulus Lupulus ( Common Hop) is a perennial, bisexual and herbaceous climbing plant with a height of 5 to 12 meters. The stems are green and angular. It has alternate leaves. The petiole is 6 to 12 cm wide, has a large serrate, and is almost circular or oval. It has 3 to 7 deep lobes or 3 to 7 incisions. The upper leaves of the female plant have no incisions. They are dark green on the upper side, rough and pale on the lower side, and covered with thin yellow tuberous hairs. The spikes are oval, 13 mm long and 8 mm wide. The panicle of the male flowers is 75 to 100 mm in diameter and the female flowers perianth grow laterally. They have a slow tip and their ends are membranous. The female flowers are in the form of a cluster and contain inflorescences, which are located next to the leaves and petals.

This plant contains alpha and beta bitter acids, tannins, flavonoids, acylfluoro-glucosinol, essential oil, humolone and lupolone.
