Botanical characteristics of European Borage (Garden) (Borago Officinalis)

It is a biennial plant, sturdy, with tall stems and wide, bristle-like hairs, usually branching at the top.

The leaves are finely serrated with a toothed edge; the lower leaves have petiole and egg-shaped lobes.  These leaves have bristle-like hairs, 3 to 7 cm in length and 2 to 5 cm in width. Furthermore, they have a pointed tip. The upper leaves are without petiole and rectangular form.

The inflorescences are usually diemous-paniculate, with a few small spearhead-like leaves at the base of the inflorescences. The cyathium-scorpion tail has no leaves, which is short, and thin, with inverted flowers on wide-bristled hairs.

The calyx is tall with white bristle-like hairs on the lobes’ edges.

The corolla is light sky-blue, 15 to 20 mm wide, with rectangular-spearhead lobes, sharp tips, and wide star-shaped. Furthermore, the cuts between them should extend near the stigma.

This plant is cross-pollinated, and insects play a significant role in its pollination.

  • The ideal temperature for the germination of these seeds is 15 to 17 °C.
  • This plant requires ample sunlight, needing 8 to 10 hours of light during July and August.
  • Growing borage (Borago Officinalis) in low-light areas leads to the production of weak branches and a decrease in plant quality.

Required nutrients for cultivation

The following nutrients are needed, for the cultivation of this plant per hectare;

  • 70 to 80 kg of nitrogen
  • 65 to 70 kg of potassium oxide
  • 60 to 70 kg of phosphorus oxide

Note: Avoid adding undecomposed animal manure to the cultivation area. Furthermore, the added fertilizers should be decomposed and dry.

Soil preparation

To cultivate this plant, the soil must be prepared. Moreover, chemical and organic fertilizers (composted animal manure mixed with compost) should be added to the soil.

In early spring, it is advisable to break up the soil clods using a disk and prepare a suitable planting bed for cultivation.

Planting time

The optimal time for planting this plant is the second half of April.

Planting method

This plant is cultivated using seeds.

The recommended amount of seed for cultivation per hectare is 5 to 6 kg if the row spacing is 70 cm.

If the row spacing is 80 to 100 cm, 3.5 to 4 kg of seed per hectare is sufficient. The seeding depth should be between 2 to 3 cm.

Harvest time

From late July to late August, the seeds of the plant are ready for harvest.

If the objective is to harvest the seeds, the harvesting process can be carried out in two stages:

During a single-stage harvest, when 40% of the plant’s seeds are ready for harvest, a grain harvester machine is used. However, this method may result in the harvesting of many immature seeds, which can impact the quality of the active ingredients.

In the single-stage method, approximately 400 to 500 kg of seeds are harvested per hectare.

For a two-stage harvest, it is recommended to place plastic under the plant during the stem growth stage.

In the two-stage harvesting method, the bushes are harvested from the ground surface and placed on plastic before the fruits fully ripen.

After 4 to 5 days, depending on the climate of the harvesting area, the medicinal parts and seeds are harvested in the two-stage harvesting method.

The two-stage harvesting method is preferred for its superior quality and quantity in terms of producing medicinal ingredients and essential oils compared to the single-stage method.

In the two-stage method, 800 to 1000 kg of seeds are harvested per hectare.
