1. Water distillation

Essences contain constituents such as fats, unlike extracts.

The presence of fats in Essential Oils results in a decrease in vapor pressure.

Certain substances, such as mucilage and saponins, do not evaporate; instead, they form a layer on the water’s surface, impeding the evaporation process.

Essences are located within the plant’s structure, including channels, chambers, sacs, etc., in connection with their secreting cells.

The release of Essential Oil from the plant tissue (gum) occurs when cell walls are ruptured, and Essential Oil particles are expelled upon contact with water vapor.

Continuing the distillation process and forming suitable steam quantities, cell walls, chambers, sacs, and channels containing the Essential Oil are broken under the influence of steam pressure.

The mentioned ruptures lead to the release and dissemination of the Essential Oil.

The speed of Essential Oil extraction from cells and the intensity of its diffusion depend on the following factors:

-Essential Oil concentration

– Water vapor speed

– Location of the Essential Oil relative to the cell wall

The dimensions of the microporous cracks, formed due to the pressure of water vapor on the cell walls containing Essential Oil, depond on the intensity and temperature of steam within the steam boiler.

If the conditions for distillation are prepared at standard levels, the distillation process occurs more efficiently and in the shortest time.

The concentration of compounds constituting Essential Oils in the steam boiler is influenced by the velocity of water vapor and the duration of distillation.

When the water vapor pressure on the plant parts is reduced, a lesser quantity of Essential Oil is released from the Asafoetida (Hing) gum.

Water vapor pressure must be applied to the Asafoetida (Hing) gum at standard levels and at the appropriate time.

Excessive water vapor pressure on the plant parts (Asafoetida (Hing) gum) reduces the concentration of the resulting Essential Oil and adversely affects the Essential Oil’s quality.

 

2. Steam distillation

In this method, the plant gum is subjected to low-pressure water vapor (0.1 bar).

Then, after passing through the plant mass, the steam collects the Essential Oil in the cooling section of the system.
