Processing Asafoetida (Hing)

Processing Asafoetida (Hing) contributes to enhancing the added value of this rare plant, elevating its monetary worth. Establishing processing plants for Asafoetida (Hing) in granule, powder, spice, and essential oilforms allows it to be supplied to consumer countries at the highest quality.

The objective of processing endangered plants is the development of cultivating, maintaining, harvesting, and processing medicinal plants outlined in Iran’s twenty-year vision document.

Achieving this vision necessitates the formulation of specialized strategies, including creating suitable infrastructure for cultivating and processing rare native medicinal plants such as Asafoetida (Hing), tragacanth, galbanum, and orchid bulb. In addition, creating a conducive environment for medical self-sufficiency through the use of medicinal plants, enhancing Iran’s position in the trade of processed medicinal plants, and generating employment opportunities are integral aspects of achieving these goals.

Wild species of medicinal plants in Iran

Globally, there are approximately 30,000 to 75,000 species of wild plants, with Iran hosting over 8,000 of these species. Some of them are unique and exclusive to Iran due to its diverse climatic regions (11 climates).

Several species of these plants are rare and threatened with extinction, including orchid bulbs, hollyhock root, licorice root, madder root, Valerian, colchicum, iris root, Coneflower root, Cerasus mahaleb’s bark, and Chicory root.

Germany, France, and England are the primary consumers of medicinal plants, annually producing and exporting numerous herbal medicines to other countries. Currently, one-third of medicines are plant-based. China, India, and the United States stand out as major exporters of medicinal plants.

Asafoetida (Hing)

Asafoetida (Hing), scientifically known as Ferula Asafoetida (Hing), belongs to the Umbelliferae family. It is one of Iran’s indigenous and exportable plant species. With the necessary investments, it holds the potential to create employment opportunities for the local population in the harvesting regions.

Asafoetida (Hing)  is a herbaceous, perennial plant with a hollow stem. It has cut leaves without petioles with yellowish flower clusters. The fruit of this plant is a dual-lobed, ovoid structure, possessing a smooth surface, and characterized by two dark brown to black seeds. The ovoid shape of the fruit is slightly broad, and it exudes a highly pungent odor.

Asafoetida (Hing) sap

The sap of Asafoetida (Hing), which is characterized by its white color, is obtained in late spring by cutting the stem of the plant in the neck region. To obtain the sap, the area around the stem of the plant’s stem is excavated, and the root above it is thoroughly cleaned, washed, and covered with leaf litter, which is spread on the soil. After forty days, the stem is separated from the root and the white sap is extracted and left to dry in the dry air.

The root of this plant is repeatedly cut from the lower part and the sap is collected.

Five cutting methods are employed to obtain Asafoetida (Hing) gum:

  1. Cross-cutting method
  2. One-sided incision method
  3. Two-sided incision method
  4. Combined incision method (one-sided and longitudinal)
  5. Longitudinal incision method

The most effective method for Asafoetida (Hing) cutting is the two-sided incision method.

The scent of this plant’s sap resembles the odor of putrid fish and rotten garlic.
