What is olibanum?
Gum Olibanum is a tree from the Burseraceae family with the scientific name of Boswellia Sacra Flueck.
Characteristics of olibanum tree
It is a short tree 2 to 8 m high with the oddly-pinnate compound leaves consisting of 7 to 15 leaflets; the serrated leaflets resembling oak leaves; the small and yellowish white flowers in axillary racemes; and the fruits are 1 cm long.
Characteristics of gum olibanum
By scraping the olibanum tree, a white resin called olibanum is exuded.
The latex of this plant hardens in contact with the air and is marketed as gum olibanum.
This gum is dry and fragrant and has an astringent and bitter taste. There are two types of gum olibanum supplied in the international trade:
- Gum imported from Africa
The gum is in the form of round teardrop-shaped pieces in the size of a chestnut; it is ground under the teeth and is like wax if broken.
- Gum olibanum imported from India
This type of olibanum is cloth-shaped and larger than the African olibanum; its color is yellow, it tastes like pine resin gum and is very fragrant.
Chemical compounds of gum olibanum
This plant contains boswellic acid, mucilage, olibanoresin, essential oil, resin, phellandrene, pinene and dipentene and 25% alcohol-insoluble gum including arabin and bassorin.
