Cultivation of Moldavian Balm (Dracocephalum Moldavica)
  • This plant is propagated by seeds or dividing basal shoots in spring and autumn.
  • This herb has little viability; therefore, the seeds are soaked for 16 to 20 hours at room temperature to enhance its vegetative features. Another method to improve the vegetative features of this plant is to leave it at zero degrees Celsius for 48 hours.

Cultivation of this plant by seeds takes place in two ways of direct and indirect:

Direct Cultivation

Direct cultivation is done in late autumn, in rows at standard intervals.

Seeds cultivated by this method germinate in early spring. Direct cultivation is not recommended because the initial growth of Moldavian Balm (Dracocephalum Moldavica) is slow.

Indirect Cultivation

In this type of cultivation, the seeds are planted in the bed, and the soil must be completely flat and fertilized. The soil receives proper surface rolling and regular irrigation after cultivation.

Vegetative reproduction occurs through the division of basal shoots.

In this method, 2- to 3-year-old plants are removed from the soil. Then, the debris and weeds are separated from the plant roots, and the plant is divided into 3 to 4 pieces.

Each plant should contain three parts:
  • Roots
  • Stem
  • Leaves

This method incurs high costs and is not justifiable from an economic perspective.

Harvest

This plant can be harvested from the first year.

Harvest takes place only once in the first year. However, from the second year onwards, the plant can be harvested two to three times a year. Therefore, given that the crop can be cultivated several times, it is profitable from an economic perspective.
